Hello, world! Welcome to A Pen in Time!
What is this? A blog about reading and writing historical YA fiction. It will be updated twice a week–once with a book review, once with a post about writing, research, or something that I think everyone ought to know about!
Why? Reading and writing are in my top 5 passions, and I know I can’t be the only one out there.
Who are you? I’m a young-at-heart, as-yet-unpublished writer. I studied Creative Writing at my first college (an exercise in “how to get along with pretentious literary types when you are a down-to-earth genre writer”. Actually, it wasn’t that bad.). I’ve been writing since I was seven. I grew up behind the local public library and spent most of my free time curled up in a corner of the dusty stacks, reading to my heart’s content: autobiographies, histories, romances, anything that caught my fancy. As I grew older, I continued to enjoy young adult fiction long after I left my teenage years behind.
What is your favorite place & time period? Right now, London–from the Georgian period to the Victorian. My book is set around the time of the Great Exhibition of 1851 (later this was moved and became known as the Crystal Palace). Originally, it was going to be set in Georgian England, but I wanted gas lighting and opium dens and the possibility of steampunk as a sub-genre.
Anything else? Please bear with me as I figure out this WordPress thing…I’m not as CSS-savvy as I used to be. Check back soon for another update (a real update, it will be about Teens in Other Times and Places. Hmm, that sounds like a blog title in the making!).
